Hiking in the Atlas Mountains/Ascendiendo las montañas Atlas – March 2025
Part 6 of A Journey Through Morocco in Twelve Days
Finally the day arrived where we were going to hike in the Atlas mountains…We started our walk and saw a village high up in the mountains, a shop at the side of the path, some terraced crops, and then we faced the snowy peaks in front of us… / Finalmente llegó el día donde subiríamos a las montañas Atlas…Al empezar la caminata vimos un pueblo alto en la montaña, una tienda al lago del sendero, unas terrazas del otro lado, y de pronto los picos nevados al frente…
Up and up, we passed more houses, we passed some women at the side of a river, men going up or coming down from the mountain riding loaded mules, we crossed streams and finally we got to a a small office at the Toubkal National Park, where we needed to register in order to proceed higher./ Seguimos subiendo, pasamos mas casas, vimos a varias mujeres caminando al lado del río, hombres subiendo o bajando de la montaña car mulas muy cargadas, cruzamos arroyos y finalmente llegamos a una pequeña oficina del Parque National Toubkal, donde tuvimos que registrarnos antes de continuar.
The road kept going up, heavy pebbles to cross, the hike leader kept a fast pace, so two of us decided to wait at the side of the path while the rest of the group continued for a while. Sitting over some boulders, we greeted groups of hikers from all over the world who were returning from the snowy covered peak. Some of them had started around five in the morning. Caravans of heavily loaded mules kept going up and down the mountain./ El sendero subía y subía, grandes piedras que cruzar, el lider mantenía un ritmo muy rápido, dos de nosotras decidimos esperar al lado del sendero mientras el resto del grupo continuaba por un trecho mas. Sentadas sobre unas piedras grandes saludamos a grupos de muchas partes del mundo que regresaban de los picos nevados. Algunos habían empezado a las cinco de la mañana. Caravanas de mulas continuaban subiendo y bajando de la montaña.
The clouds were getting darker, and a storm was on its way. When the rest of our group returned we started our descent. But this was not the end of the hike, pretty soon we were climbing up again on our way to the village high up in the mountain./Las nubes se oscurecían, y una tormenta se acercaba. Cuando el resto del grupo regresó comenzamos a descender. Pero esto no era el fin de la caminata, pronto empezamos a subir nuevamente hacia el pueblo alto en la montaña.
The storm was upon us. We walked back in the middle of heavy rain… It felt so great to remove my boots and lay down on a warm bed back at the hotel!/La tormenta estaba encima nuestro. Regresamos en el medio de una fuerte lluvia. Que bien me sentí al quitarme las botas y acostarme en una cama tibia al regresar al hotel!
