From Fes to Erfoud, Morocco

FROM FES TO ERFOUD – Part 3 of: A Journey Through Morocco in Twelve Days – March 2025

We left Fes and prepared for the long drive to Erfoud. The following day we would be entering the Sahara desert, it seemed a dream come true! Shortly after starting to cross the Atlas mountains we were surprised by a snow storm, and by a few monkeys asking for food at the side of the road.

Salimos de Fes y nos preparamos para el largo viaje a Erfoud. El próximo día entraríamos al desierto del Sahara, me parecía un sueño hecho realidad! Cuando cruzábamos las montañas Atlas nos sorprendió una tormenta de nieve y un grupo de monos pidiendo comida al costado del camino.

The landscape kept changing, mountains, valleys, blue lakes…We saw houses inhabited by nomads. We passed the largest oasis in Morocco, miles and miles of trees, and after six long hours we arrived at Erfoud.

El paisaje cambiaba constantemente, montañas, valles, lagos azules… Vimos casas habitadas por nómades. Pasamos el oasis mas grande de Marruecos, kilómetros y kilómetros de árboles, y después de seis largas horas llegamos a Erfoud.

The next morning, after a deserved rest, we visited the village of Ksar M’aadid. Very narrow streets that protect from the heat, and dark houses with interior rooms connecting into each other, their walls and furnishings exquisitely decorated. We were treated to a performance by some of the local musicians. What a way to prepare for the afternoon at the Sahara desert!

El próximo día, después de un merecido descanso, visitamos el pueblo de Ksaw M’aadid. Calles angostas que protegen del sol, casas oscuras con cuartos interiores que conectan entre sí, sus paredes y muebles decorados exquisitamente. Un grupo de músicos locales nos ofreció un concierto. Que manera de prepararnos para la tarde en el desierto del Sahara!

FROM CHEFCHAOUEN TO FES – Part 2 of: A Journey Through Morocco in Twelve Days – March 2025

We left the city of Chefchaouen ready for another long journey to Fes. We passed rolling hills, towns full of merchants selling their vegetables along the main street, plantations of olive trees and, after an hour, we arrive at the Roman ruins of Volubilis. Walking on the two thousand year old stones and looking at the massive columns made me think about how ephemeral life is, and how important it is to appreciate every moment!

.Salimos de Chefchaouen y now preparamos para otro largo viaje hasta Fes. Pasamos lomas ondulantes, pueblos llenos de mercaderes vendiendo en la calle principal, olivares y, despues de una hora llegamos a las ruinas Romanas de Volubilis. Caminando en las calles construídas hace dos mil años y mirando las columnas masivas me hizo pensar cuan efímera es la vida, y que importante is apreciar cada momento!

Four or five hours later we arrived in Fes, spiritual center of Morocco and its previous capital. A large wooden door led us into a riad displaying exquisite details of Moroccan architecture. The walls, the draperies, the lamps, everything we looked at was a feast for the eyes. Later we walked into a nearby restaurant displaying similar arquitecture and glorious food!

Cuatro o cinco horas mas tarde llegamos a Fez, centro espiritual de Marruecos y su capital previa. Una puerta grande de madera se abrió a un riad con exquisitos detalles de arquitectura Marroquí. Las paredes, cortinas, lámparas, todo lo que mirábamos era una fiesta para los ojos. Mas tarde caminamos a un restaurante cercano con una arquitectura similar y comida exquisita!

The medina at Fes is a laberinth of narrow streets full of activity, stall after stall with merchants selling their olives, dates, species, leather goods, pottery, etc., etc. It was only day four in our tour, but four days so full of rich experiences!

La medina en Fes es un laberinto de calles estrechas llenas de actividad, puesto tras puesto con mercaderes vendiendo aceitunas, dátiles, especies, artículos de cuero, artesanías, etc., etc. Era sólo el cuarto día en la gira, pero cuatro días so llenos the experiencias tan ricas!

The next day we started the trip to Arfoud before going into the Sahara. I felt the excitement rising even more…

Between a Tango and a Danzón, Cuba

BETWEEN A TANGO AND A DANZON – ENTRE UN TANGO Y UN DANZON (2018 – 60 MIN.)

This documentary explores the cultural and historical influences of these two musical genres in Cuba’s society today. Filmed in the cities of Havana, Matanzas and Gibara, this documentary includes scenes with dancers, singers and musicians in neighborhood peñas and milongas. Archival footage of legendary danzón and tango artists, such as Barbarito Diez, Carlos Gardel or Libertad Lamarque, add a nostalgic feeling. Through testimonies and interviews, the film reveals the efforts to revitalize the danzón, Cuban national dance, and to attract the youth to this genre by mixing it with different rhythms, including jazz.

Este documental explora las influencias históricas y culturales de estos dos géneros musicales en la sociedad Cubana contemporánea. El documental incluye escenas con bailarines, cantantes y músicos en peñas y milongas en diferentes barrios de La Habana, Matanzas y Gibara. Materiales de archivo de artistas legendarios del danzón y del tango, como Barbarito Diez, Carlos Gardel y Libertad Lamarque, agregan una nota de nostalgia. A través de testimonios y entrevistas, el film revela los esfuerzos para revitalizar el danzón, danza national de Cuba, y atraer a la juventud mezclándolo con diferentes ritmos, incluso el del jazz.

A drum circle organized by Cheryl Miller Glover and Dave Miller in Johnson Park, in anticipation of the EarthVibes Festival in May 23-25, took a very special quality when a group of families and their children, who were having a picnic at the park, joined the circle and begun to play several instruments enthusiastically./Un círculo de tambores organizado por Cheryl Miller Glover y Dave Miller en Johnson Park, en anticipación del EarthVibes Festival del 23 al 25 de mayo, se convirtió en un evento muy especial cuando un grupo de familias y sus niños, que estaban en un picnic en el parque, se unieron al círculo y empezaron a tocar varios instrumentos con gran entusiasmo.

MARCH 2025 – When I landed in Casablanca in my trip to Mororro I had the fantasy of seeing Humprey Bogard walking into Rick’s Café, and Ingrid Bergman saying Play it again, Sam! Then I remembered that the film was made in Hollywood, and the magic disappeared…/ Cuando llegué a Casablanca en mi viaje a Marruecos tenía la fantasía de ver a Humprey Bogard entrando en el Café de Rick, y a Ingrid Bergman diciendo: “Play it again, Sam?” Pero recordé que la película se había filmado en Hollywood, y la magia desapareció.

The Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca is imponent, spectacular, hard to imagine 25,000 people gathering inside to pray! /El Mosque Hassan II en Casablanca es imponente, espectacular, difícil imaginar a 25,000 personas reuniéndose adentro para rezar!

After spending the previous night in the airplane, five hours in the van to Chefchaouen was rather difficult, but as we were arriving, the view from Chefchaouen nested in the Rif mountains made me forget the discomfort! The narrow streets of its medina are a surrealistic blend of colors, with the colorful garments worn by those walking, the merchandise in the many shops and the blue houses and streets./Después de haber pasado la noche anterior en el avión, no fue fácil estar cinco horas en el omnibus a Checkchauen, pero la vista de la ciudad al llegar, en el medio de las montañas Rif, me hizo olvidar mi cansancio. Las calles estrechas de la medina son una mezcla surrealista de colores, con la ropa de los que caminan, la mercancía en los negocios, y muchas de las calles y casas pintadas de azul.

Exploring Crete, Greece

EXPLORING CRETE, GREECE / EXPLORANDO CRETA, GRECIA November 2024

Crete has so many mountains and beaches and villages, and so many other incredible places, that a two day visit from Chania in November 0f 2024 left me longing to keep exploring this beautiful island: The Cretan sea, a two thousand year old tree in a Roman necropolis in Ancient Chania, the villages and old towns, the food in the local taverns…I never thought a tomato could taste so good!

Creta tiene tantas montañas y playas y pueblos, y tangos lugages increíbles, quedespués de una visita de dos días en noviembre del 2024, quisiera continuar explorando esta hermosa isla: El mar de Creta, un árbol de dos mil años en una cementerio romano, los pueblos y pequeñas ciudades, la comida en las tavernas…Nunca pensé que un tomate podría ser tan sabroso!

The Venetian harbor of Chania, built by the Venetians during their occupation of Crete between 1204 and 1669, is a magical place. Even though it is surrounded by people and restaurants, its water is incredibly transparent, a gigantic swimming pool – although swimming is forbidden! Watching people passing by while enjoying a cup of strong Greek coffee in the afternoon brought me memories of Louis Amstrong’s “It’s a Wonderful Day!” And a tango brunch on a rainy Sunday afternoon was an unexpected surprise. I will remember Chania.

El puerto Veneciano de Chania, construído during la ocupación de Creta entre 1204 y 1660, es un lugar mágico. Aunque está rodeado de gente y de restaurantes, sus aguas son transparentes y parecen una piscina gigantesca – aunque está prohibido nadar en ellas! Mirando a la gente que pasa mientras disfrutaba un fuerte café griego durante la tarde me hizo pensar en Luis Amstrong’s “Es un Mundo Maravilloso!” Y bailando tango en un almuerzo, durante un lluvioso domingo de verano, fue una sorpresa inesperada. Recordaré a Chania.

Memories from Athens, Greece

MEMORIES FROM ATHENS, GREECE/MEMORIAS DE ATENAS, GRECIA

In November of 2024 I visited Athens for the first time. It was only a few days, but the visit left a lasting impression. The Parthenon on top of the Acropolis, illuminated throughout the night, seemed to be an enormous lighthouse. The Ancient Agora was the center of activity in Athens two thousand years ago. Walking among its ruins I could hear the voices of the past, Socrates and the other philosophers, the merchants shouting their wares… The market place is a feast for the eyes, with so many different kinds of fish and spices and colors and smells! And…yes! You can dance tango in Athens, every day of the week.

En noviembre del 2024 visité Atenas por primera vez. Fue sólo unos días, pero la visita me impresionó. El Partenón en la cima de la Acrópolis, iluminado durante la noche, me parecía un faro gigantesco. La Agora Antigua fue el centro de actividades en Atenas hace dos mil años. Caminando en sus ruinas me parecía escuchas las voces del pasado, Sócrates y los otros filósofos, los mercaderes gritando sus productos..El mercado es una fiesta para los ojos, con tantas diferences clases de pescado y especies y colores y olores! Y…sí! Usted puede bailar tango en Atena cada día de la semana.

In 2001 I visited Buenos Aires, and I saw myself in the middle of the massive demonstrations of people that protested the chaos in the country caused by the government economic policies. Many were forced to leave the country, others remained. Global Tango is a collage of personal memories, testimories from tango artists, performances and cinema verité, to tell the story of the displacement of Argentineans caused by the economic crisis. www.tiempoazul.org

En el 2001 visité Buenos Aires, y me vi envuelta en el medio de las protestas masivas por el caos causado por la política económica del gobierno. Muchos fueron forzados a dejar el país, otros se quedaron. This winter has been long, but spring is almost here…/Este invierno ha sido largo, pero la primavera se está acercando...

A few months later…Spring is already here, and with temperatures higher than normal. I designed this post during the long winter when I started to learn Word Press. It hasn’t been so easy and, since I am still learning it, I decided to post it anyway. Maybe this time I can move forward.

Unos meses mas tarde…Ya llegó la primavera, y con temperaturas mas altas de lo normal. Diseñé esta nota durante un largo invierno, cuando empecé a aprender Word Press. No ha sido fácil y, ya que todavía sigo aprendiendolo, he decidido publicarla. Quizás esta vez puedo avanzar en el proceso.
