The Venetian harbor of Chania, built by the Venetians during their occupation of Crete between 1204 and 1669, is a magical place. Even though it is surrounded by people and restaurants, its water is incredibly transparent, a gigantic swimming pool – although swimming is forbidden! Watching people passing by while enjoying a cup of strong Greek coffee in the afternoon brought me memories of Louis Amstrong’s “It’s a Wonderful Day!”  And a tango brunch on a rainy Sunday afternoon was an unexpected surprise. I will remember Chania.

El puerto Veneciano de Chania, construído during la ocupación de Creta entre 1204 y 1660, es un lugar mágico. Aunque está rodeado de gente y de restaurantes, sus aguas son transparentes y parecen una piscina gigantesca – aunque está prohibido nadar en ellas! Mirando a la gente que pasa mientras disfrutaba un fuerte café griego durante la tarde me hizo pensar en Luis Amstrong’s “Es un Mundo Maravilloso!” Y bailando tango en un almuerzo, durante un lluvioso domingo de verano, fue una sorpresa inesperada. Recordaré a Chania.

In November of 2024 I visited Athens for the first time. It was only a few days, but the visit left a lasting impression. The Parthenon on top of the Acropolis, illuminated throughout the night, seemed to be an enormous lighthouse. The Ancient Agora was the center of activity in Athens two thousand years ago. Walking among its ruins I could hear the voices of the past, Socrates and the other philosophers, the merchants shouting their wares… The market place is a feast for the eyes, with so many different kinds of fish and spices and colors and smells! And…yes! You can dance tango in Athens, every day of the week.

En noviembre del 2024 visité Atenas por primera vez. Fue sólo unos días, pero la visita me impresionó. El Partenón en la cima de la Acrópolis, iluminado durante la noche, me parecía un faro gigantesco. La Agora Antigua fue el centro de actividades en Atenas hace dos mil años. Caminando en sus ruinas me parecía escuchas las voces del pasado, Sócrates y los otros filósofos, los mercaderes gritando sus productos..El mercado es una fiesta para los ojos, con tantas diferences clases de pescado y especies y colores y olores! Y…sí! Usted puede bailar tango en Atena cada día de la semana.
